On a misty Tuesday night at about 9:45 p.m we were headed to an undisclosed location in Brooklyn. Upon reaching our destination, we arrive at this building that seemed to mesh well, considering Brooklyn is known for it’s grit and glamour. We were let in by the doorman, almost immediately like we were expected, and he asked us to wait in the lobby. We waited and two young gentlemen came down to greet us. And they gave us the grand tour. First stop was the pool room, which was decked out with a pool table, flat screen t.v’s, lounge chairs and decor from crate & barrel topped off with a bar and a full sized refrigerator. So then, we headed downstairs and was introduced to a fully equipped sauna, heated pool and a gym. Next stop was the rooftop deck, decked out with a jacuzzi and stunning triboro views of Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn. Finally, we were introduced to his trendy bachelor loft: marble counter tops, jacuzzi jetted tub, polished hardwood floors and amazing views from the balcony. After getting seated and offered drinks, the questions begin…
Kessa: Who is this “Mellow Entertainment?”
Mel: “Well, I was working at a record label where I used my network to connect people together. Then, my niece suggested that I should charge for my services.”
Kessa: Describe your business and how it works.
Mel & Josh: Basically we are consultants in entertainment. So to break down, people that have a need we connect them to people that can fulfill that need. We’re the middle men.
Kessa: What is a day like for you two?
Mel: Well, I get up around 12/1pm (depending on the night before), then I head into the bathroom, get naked and say a mantra.
Kessa and Inobe look at each other, like…..”Huh?”
So then Mel: Yeah, I said it, “Naked.” After the mantra, he takes a shower then heads to the gym and handles other morning rituals. Then it’s on to the most important part of the day: Networking. Which includes meeting up Josh and discussing the days plans. Who to meet up with, who to connect with and who to connect who with who.
Josh: I’m very boring. I wake up, blast my music, take a shower and watch the sports center while eating. I live in the LES, so I always like to take new routes and explore the neighborhood and meet people that I normally wouldn’t meet and strike up a conversation.
Kessa: How did you get into this line of business?
Mel: I’ve been in the business since I was 15, I interned at Violator Management in the promotion and marketing department for Missy Elliott.
Josh: I got into promotion through a group of other promoters based in Brooklyn, a couple of years ago. I threw a party with them at Mars 2112, and it was a success. I did a couple of more parties, until I decided to focus on my career at H&M. Although I was no longer promoting, I continued to be in the nightlife scene and always had that itch to get back into promotion. It wasn’t until I met Mello that chose to take that dive, and it’s been history ever since.
Kessa: What is the key to your success?
Mel: Is by having faith, believing you can accomplish your goal.
Josh: The keys to my/our success are perseverance and the ability to read people. I’ve learned that there are a lot of shady people within this industry and there is no such thing as friend or foe. Everybody is here for the sole purpose of succeeding by any means necessary. I was lucky enough to have a partnership that grew from a friendship, thus, trust playing a key factor within this partnership itself.
Kessa: Do you find it hard to date being in your line of work?
Both: Because we rub elbows with celebrities and people in the entertainment business, some girls become star struck.
Kessa: What kind of woman are you looking for?
Mel: I want woman that can give me mental stimulation. Someone who compliments me. I want a woman who is natural, not artificial. Be yourself, you know, read a book while being able to fart. Cleanliness is a must!!! Social drinking is okay, but nothing heavy. No smoking and no drugs. ( A few laughs and stories were thrown in regarding hygeine)
Josh: I don’t mind a woman who smokes and drinks. A drunk is a no-no though. I must confess, I love women with long, curly hair. Also, she has to be hygenic. (A few more laughs)
Kessa: Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now?
Both: Professionally, being branded better with a functioning company with staff.
Mel: Personally, I want to be in a relationship, Move to L.A and have two children.
Josh: I love NY too much so I wouldn’t move. But, I want to be married before 35 and have 2 children by 30. I want a marriage whereas we work as a unit and a team. It’s “we” not “I” or “you”.
Kessa: Are you looking for a relationship?
Mel tells us that he is focused on his career, while Josh is actively looking.
Kessa: What keeps a guy faithful?
Mel: A woman with confidence, personality like being yourself, cleanliness and also mental stimulation.
Josh: I like a woman who is well maintained, cleanliness as well and no baggage.
Kessa: Do you like being in a relationship or would you prefer to be single?
Both: We would like to be in a relationship.
